What causes changes to our pelvic floor?



Our pelvic floor is the base of our pelvis, it acts like a hammock to support and hold our pelvic organs (Bladder, Uterus & Bowel) up against gravity. Further it helps to keep as continent (not leaking).


When our pelvic floor muscles are functioning optimally we can run, skip, laugh and sneeze without any leaking or feeling of heaviness around the vagina opening.

Just like any other muscle within the body, our pelvic floor muscles may be too tight, too long, too weak or too strong which can affect the pelvic floor function.


Symptoms that you may be experiencing if you are experiencing changes in your pelvic floor may include:

  • Inability to hold in urine when you are unable to get to a bathroom

  • Leaking with activities that put additional pressure on the bladder (e.g cough, sneeze, run or skip)

  • Inability to hold in your farts or poo

  • Decreased sexual arousal or difficulty reaching orgasm

  • A sensation of heaviness or dragging around the entrance of the vagina, this may increase post walk/run

  • Difficulty holding a tampon in or pain when inserting

  • Difficulty emptying your bowels

  • Pain around the pelvic girdle region


Changes to your pelvic floor may be a result of multiple factors, including: childbirth, trauma, weight loss or gain, high physical stress/load, pelvic girdle/lower limb mobility restrictions and an emotional response.
